Nico Rosberg gave Mercedes the second win of the season, a Grand Prix full of drama, with the tires once again to be the main protagonists of the race. At the end of the first "stint" suffered several drivers tire blowouts, leading to a long period of safety car in order to be removed from the enormous track debris scattered along the path Silverstone. The first to fall victim to a burst tire was precisely the race leader Lewis Hamilton, who led comfortably from the start. Straight after Mass was to suffer the same problem, and few laps later would be the Toro Rosso of Jean-Eric Vergne to be the victim of a thunderous explosion of a tire on the Hangar Straight, with some debris to reach the helmet Kimi Raikkonen, followed just behind the French, fortunately without consequences for man's Lotus.
He rose to doubt whether there was safe to proceed with the race as it was not known whether the problem was the tires or possibly damaged in some corrector, because it was always the left rear tire to give problems for several drivers. The Safety-Car period was relatively long as well, because it was necessary to inspect the track in detail. There was no problem on the track, and Pirelli advised all teams to increase the tire pressure to avoid further problems, being given the green light for the resumption of proof. Once the Safety-Car headed to the pits, Vettel quickly earned a difference to safe face Rosberg, Sutil to be a surprising 3rd at this stage of the race. The German RedBull seemed headed for a comfortable win when suddenly about 10 laps to go, he appeared at idle at the entrance of the home straight, eventually becomes stationary next to the pit wall, apparently due to a problem transmission. As the RedBull was in a position difficult to remove, the Safety-Car came back into the track, and it was at this stage that played the tactics which were to have decisive role in the final standings. Mercedes, who inherited the lead with Rosberg Vettel after the stop, immediately ordered the German drive to the pits to change tires with similar tactics to be followed by Alonso, Webber and other pilots. Inexplicably, Lotus has not done the same with Kimi Raikkonen, who after starting the race in 8th was rising steadily from positions along the race fell to 2nd after the withdrawal of Vettel, seeming to be in a position to threaten Rosberg after the period the Safety-Car, as the pilot of Lotus was pretty fast. However, the inexplicable tactic of choice for not changing the tires of Finnish, led to Kimi Raikkonen being a prey to his opponents after the restart, eventually falling to 5th and losing a golden opportunity to return to great results, perhaps to victory, and move even closer to the championship leader, who despite the withdrawal remains Sebastian Vettel.
Who benefited from the disastrous choice of Lotus was Mark Webber, who after a failed start (one more ...) had fallen to the middle of the pack. With an aggressive driving and the various incidents throughout the race, the Australian RedBull was up several positions, and "stint" end, after the last period of Safety-Car, with new tires, quickly overtook several drivers until the 2nd , and even pressed Rosberg along the final lap. There has to win, but turned out to be a great race for Webber, even more so after the bad start. Finished just behind Alonso, who also have to he chosen to change tires turned out to be extremely fast over the last six laps, achieving an outcome that seemed unthinkable for Ferrari at the start of the race. The Spaniard, contrary to the usual, even had a bad start, losing some positions, having a relatively quiet race, always in the places that count, but it seemed impossible to go beyond a 5th, 6th place. However, with a good choice made by his team ended up getting in the end overcome several riders, achieving a podium that had probably taste victory for the Spaniard. In Hamilton eventually finished fourth, which fell past the hole to the last places. The various implications of the race, combined with a warrior attitude by the British pilot, allowed the winning positions, ending by the end achieve a result that seemed impossible after the problem we had.
Kimi Raikkonen finished 5th and should be furious with his team, having lost a golden opportunity to get a great result. During the Safety-Car came a pilot's communication with the team, questioning precisely the fact that they have not called to change tires, so if you are awaiting the statements of Finnish, which should not fertilize much in favor of the tactic chosen. At a time that speaks strongly in the possibility of man's Lotus heading to Red Bull next season, and a time when the rider himself has said it has a tough choice ahead, errors of this kind must not support the very cause of Lotus, if they want to continue to rely on the services of the Iceman ...
Felipe Massa, after a round "cannon" that took him from 11th on the grid to 5th place at the end of the first lap, turned out to be one of the victims of the holes, relegating the Brazilian to the bottom of the league. A good recovery eventually take you to the 6th place finish, a result that has to be considered positive. Adrian Sutil would finish in 7th, a result despontante, especially after similar conditions to achieve a podium position throughout much of the race. However, as in Lotus, Force India also did not change tires Sutil in the last period of Safety-Car, with German, like Raikkonen to be walking almost a chicane in the closing laps ... unexplainable, no doubt!
In 8th Ricciardo would finish, which for much of the race walked most important places ... also he changed tires at the end! Paul di Resta, after an excellent qualifying in which he won the 5th place on the grid, eventually see all their time canceled because his Force India was underweight regulatory, and was forced from last. A race full of claw by the Scots was rewarded in the end with the 9th place showing in fact the good form of Force India. It was the third consecutive race that Di Resta dropped the last places, and they all recovered to the places that count, which has considerably increased the rate of the pilot. Finished in last place scoring Nico Hulkenberg, who once again struggled with a Sauber which is a real shadow single seater last year. Again the doors of points was Williams with Maldonado and Bottas 11th and 12th. Yet this was the Grove team got their first points of the year. Worse Mclaren with Button not go beyond 13th place finish. After all, over a long period of running the Mclaren walked through places much better, but Button ended up losing several positions and Perez was another victim of the holes and eventually abandon the race due to damage caused by the tire to its single seater.
At the bottom of the table, the Caterham returned to supplant Marussia, with Charles Pic to be the 15th in the final in front of Bianchi. Again, and as usual, the four cars of these two teams occupied the last four positions among those who finished the race, and immediately in front of them, also as has been standard over the Mexican Esteban Gutierrez, who continues to have a difficult debut season in Formula 1.
After the race this week-end, and despite the withdrawal, Vettel continues to lead comfortably at the table reserved for pilots, with a total of 132 points, with Alonso now closer to 21 points the German RedBull. Raikkonen holds 3rd place, now totaling 98 points, with Hamilton and Webber to the Top5 close, with 89 and 87 points respectively. In the table of the teams, the RedBull continues with a comfortable lead, with a total of 219 points, but the Mercedes is now the 2nd place, totaling 171 points and more importantly, it seems to take up its role as the 2nd strength squad. The Ferrari is now in 3rd, 3 points behind the German team, with Lotus 4th, already a considerable distance. The Enstone team adds now 124, with Force India to strengthen the 5th position in the table, with a total of 59 points.
The World Championship Formula 1 return by next week-end, with the race of the Grand Prix of Germany, which this year will take place at the Nurburgring track. However should this be a week very lively, and where certainly much ink will run because obviously something has to be done by Pirelli and the FIA to avoid repeating the problems that attended this afternoon at Silverstone. If until now the teams do not understand about the need to make changes in the construction of the tires Italians now definitely seems that security is strongly called into question, and something must be done to solve the problem before something really serious can happen. An issue not to be missed over the next few days.
